Requiem High Mass at Epiphany Church in San Francisco

A Requiem High Mass was celebrated at Epiphany Church, by Fr. William Young, a priest of the Archdiocese of San Francisco last week. The deceased was the mother of one of our parishioners at St. Margaret Mary's. Our Requiem Choir also sang for the mass.

My dad (Wilfredo Balza Sr.) passed away last Saturday (Sept. 25)

As some of you may have learned, my dad, Wilfredo J. Balza Sr, passed away last Saturday at 10AM, after battling with lung cancer and cirhosis in the liver. He was fortunate to have been given the Last Rites (Sacrament of Extreme Unction) the night before he died. My apologies for the late posting as we have just finished the viewing and funeral arrangements. Please see the funeral schedule listed below:

For those new to the Traditional Latin Requiem Mass:

1) Latin-English Requiem Booklet Missals will be available and distributed before the Mass. This will enable you to follow along during Mass. Kindly return after use.

2) Out of respect for Our Lord and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, please dress in an appropriate manner.

3) Please turn off or silence your cellphone.

General norms for receiving Holy Communion in the Catholic Church:

Those who receive should:

1) Be baptized Catholics in full communion and in good standing with the Church

2) Be in a state of Sanctifying Grace (i.e. not conscious of any mortal sin).

3) Have fasted at least one hour before receiving the Blessed Sacrament.

In the Traditional Latin Mass, the communicant receives the Sacred Host on the TONGUE

(NOT ON THE HAND) while kneeling. The "Amen" is said by the priest (not by the

communicant).

High Requiem Mass every month at St. Margaret Mary's Church

Plenary Indulgence during the week of the Departed (Nov. 1 - 8)

Here are the conditions to gain plenary indulgences for the Poor Souls in Purgatory during the month of November. We must be 1) Free from all attachment to sin (it would be helpful to pray, from the heart, the "Act of Contrition"), 2) Receive Holy Communion on or near the day we perform the action required, 3) Go to Confession within eight days, 4) Visit a cemetery and pray, even mentally, for the dead (One Our Father, and One Creed) and pray for the intentions of the Pope (One Our Father, One Hail Mary, 1 Glory Be). The traditional prayers are Ps. 129 preceded by 5 Our Fathers and 5 Hail Mary's. One may also opt to pray a decade of the Rosary. Here follows Ps. 129:

At St. Margaret Mary, since Nov. 2, Canon Jean-Marie Moreau has been leading some of the parishioners to pray at the closest cemetery (St. Mary's Cemetery - 4529 Howe St., Oakland, CA 94611; google map) after the 6pm weekday low mass. Everyone is welcome to join us!

Also tomorrow, Thursday (November 5), is a First Thursday. A plenary indulgence (for the living) on occasion of the Year of the Priests is available on this day. During the week after All Souls, this 1st Thursday, it is also encouraged to pray in a special way for the souls of deceased priests. Thanks to Fr. Z for this heads-up!
